DB Shahlaha (*Shakhs x AK Mahlaha)
1987 Grey Straight Egyptian Mare
Dahman Shahwan Strain

Asked to pick out a filly from the 1987 foal crop of Desert Arabian Bloodstock in exchange for caring, feeding, boarding and foaling out 40+ horses that year we looked and mulled and argued among us. But when our eyes lit on "Shalla" as she slid out onto the straw that year - we knew. It would be her. And our grandmatron has been a showstopper ever since. Visitors always want to know "Who the white mare in the top pasture is." The answer - Shalla. A mare of exquisite type and beauty - she was shown lightly as a yearling to a couple of ribbons at Class A shows. But Shalla had so much energy and fire she would not ever keep her four feet on the ground in the halter classes! Rather than beat her into submission - we laughed and told her she did not have to win in the show ring to win our hearts. Her offspring have been consistently typey if not exotic, tall and elegant and then watch them move. now that is where they float like their dam. She is such a "work of art" to us that we have named her children and grandchildren with artists names. We have sold her sons across the globe to be herd sires...... In fact, Michelangelo KA her eldest by Nabiel+/ has winning offspring in Europe, and Davinci KA - another son in Abu Dabi has a winning daughter who was just named Champion in her class at the prestigious Qatar Nationals. The youngest son, Donatello KA is proudly owned by Mary Ellen Chavez and stayed home in the U.S. in New Mexico. After a winning halter career he is now embarking on a National Western Pleasure career. We have retained all her daughters at this point. Her eldest daughter is the breathtaking Matisse KA and has produced two exquisite fillies and one gorgeous colt for us so far. Her next two daughters will be joining the broodmare band this year and next year. After a couple years off from a foaling complication we will be trying to breed Shalla again naturally this year - but if that is not possible we will do an ET on her for 2006.

A classic sight to behold this heavily fleabitten mare grazing in pasture. "Ellie" is a big, bold mare with huge dark eyes and an equally huge trot. A long neck and upright stature from her world famous sire combined with a terrific female line. (to the same mare as our treasured DB Shahlaha) Most of the horses tracing back to *Naadya carry her wonderful type through several generations. We currently have a dynamite son of hers available for purchase sired by MB Mayal. He is already an Event winner and Reserve Champion. Saahara KA (MB Talmaar x Imperial Saahoura)
1999 Grey Straight Egyptian Mare
Dahman Shahwan Strain

With Cleopatraa eyes this young mare will entrance you. We purchased her dam Imperial Saahoura specifically because of her female lineage to the great Imperial Mistilll and tail female to Ansata Nile Mist. Saahoura herself was an Egyptian Event Junior Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Mare at the tender age of 2. A tall, elegant and very queenly mare - we adored Saahoura. At her side at the time of purchase was a darling filly - we called "Sara". Saahoura was first bred to Marquis I and produced the beautiful Nile Lord KA - now owned by and standing at stud with Charles and Connie Budreau of Nebraska. Unfortunately while carrying her second foal for us - by Marquis, she suffered a tragic accident in a lightening storm. Her heart and courage as she fought to live touched us all. She held on to the exotic filly until one month before foaling when it was too much for her and she aborted. Within a short time after that it became apparent that Saahoura was suffering greatly and her game spirit would not let go. We made the painful decision to end her suffering humanely, thus losing her and her Marquis daughter. Luckily we had taken Sara off the sales list when the accident happened and now have a gorgeous daughter of Saahoura in our broodmare band. Sara is interesting on the sire side as well with her grandsire Talmaal very closely related to another foundation mare of Janice Bush's - Talyla, the dam of Antigua Dance. Talmaal is also out of the beautiful Talya as was Talyla. Sara has grown into a beautiful mare with her exotic face and terrific movement. Her first foal is one of the last foals sired by Makhsous prior to his death. Aptly named Glorious KA this lovely white filly went Top Ten Senior Yearling Futurity Filly at the 2005 Event. Saahara produced another lovely filly by Marquis I in 2005 - very elegant and showing much of the profile of her famous grandmother. Saahara is currently in foal to Marquis again for 2006.

Star Bint Hafiza (Ibn Dahmahn x AK Amiri Fayrouz)
1986 Bay Straight Egyptian Mare
Saklawi Jedran Sudan Strain

Star Bint is one of our grandmatrons here at Kehilan and most reknowned for her son, the stunning Makhnificent KA. Having seen Star Bint as a young mare at Bentwood, we remembered her quality. She came to be bred at Kehilan along with Raquin RA, both owned by Jay Barnes at the time. Kehilan and Dennis Key eventually bought Raquin RA and Jean Rogers eventually bought Star Bint. At her side was a very lovely Raquin daughter - Dahmahn Becca. We immediately bred her to Makhsous and then nearly lost her and her son during foaling. The big, grey colt was upside down and after an hour of struggling we finally delivered him only to find he was not breathing and blue. While we resuscitated the colt, Star Bint became colicky from a hemorrhage. Eventually, both were thankfully okay and that big, grey colt nicknamed "Bubba" grew into her National Winning son Makhnificent KA. She also produced a full sibling - Bodacious KA who has garnered impressive wins. Bodacious has been a Regional Top 5 Sweepstakes Colt, Twice Event Top Ten Futurity Colt, Jr. Champion Stallion and National Top Ten Hunter Futurity Horse! With only 3 of her offspring shown - all three have been winners and 2 are National winners! The winning ways are no surprise given her sire, Ibn Dahmahn was a winner in Halter and Western Pleasure. He is a son of the exceptional and exquisite mare - Dahmah Shawaniah and was also purchased by Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen of Argentina. No less an important producer, Star Bint's dam - AK Amiri Fayrouz has enjoyed a stellar broodmare career in the barn of Hassaniain Al- Nakeeb of the Al-Nakeeb Stud in Jordan. She traces to the grand old *Tuhotmos daughter - *Maather. And tail female is to the Moniet El Nefous daughter - Mona. Star Bint is one of the other queens at Kehilan along with Antigua Dance. Her big black eyes and wonderful expression are sure to steal your heart! Star Bint is being bred to Makhsous via frozen semen for a 2006 foal - cross your fingers!

AK Bint Sittana
1980 grey Straight Egyptian Mare
Saklawi Jedran Strain

Early in our breeding years we were able to select 1 mare and 1 filly from Desert Arabian Bloodstock in return for boarding and caring for their herd of Straight Horses for an extended period of time. The filly was DB Shahlaha - one of our leading broodmares. The mare was AK Bint Sittana. A snow white daughter of the legendary *Ibn Moniet El Nefous, Sittana proved to be a valuable broodmare for us until her untimely death due to colic. Her influence through her daughter KA Naadya can be seen in some of Kehilan's most exotic horses today. At the time of her death, Sittana orphaned a Makhsous filly - Annah KA. Annah is currently on lease to Nancy Pierce of Journeys End Arabians in Vilonia, Arkansas. Sittana was one of those unusual mares that we call an "incubator mare". That is - her foals all looked primarily like the sire - inheriting some elegance and stretch from Sittana each time. Her influence can be seen in our treasured Event Futurity Champion - Arabella KA and many others...... We thank Sittana for all the wonderful grandchildren and greatgrandchildren we have in our lives!

AK Maliya
1985 Grey Straight Egyptian Mare
Saklawi Strain

The Egyptian Arabian mare shared the tent with her Bedouin family. Often sleeping inside with the children and living life with her family except when needed in times of war and raid where she then displayed her tremendous courage and heart. Maliya, no doubt was a beautiful mare. Royally bred, as a coveted Egyptian Prince daughter and with a classic desert type. But it was her "tent disposition" and courage that endeared her to her Kehilan family. We had always to be careful with Maliya and new foals - she was a baby-stealer supreme. Even if she had a foal at side - she simply loved foals! One year when Maliya had reabsorbed her own foal and was open we had our prize Shaikh Al Badi daughter Glorieta Sharima die unexpectedly and left an orphan filly of 3 weeks of age. This filly Binte Sharima, was not doing well as an orphan. Despite having raised many orphans very successfully this filly was not thriving and further she contracted the deadly rhodococcus pneumonia and was fighting for her life. One day while we were working in the stall trying to feed the filly and give her inhalation treatments - Maliya was stalled next to her for the day waiting for the farrier. She nickered and screamed for the filly through the bars as usual...... but we noticed the filly seemed brighter and definitely interested in Maliya. Tentatively, we brought Maliya into the stall with the filly. Immediately, she seized little Rima and pulled her close. Nickering to her quietly the entire time - telling her it would be okay. She looked at us and then chased us out of the stall! It was her foal now and we were to leave them to bond. And so we did. And the filly gained strength and now was eating better and winning the pneumonia battle. About two weeks later we noticed that the filly was nursing Maliya in between her bucket feedings. Much to our amazement, upon further inspection Maliya now had a bag with a watery but white milk. The vet was amazed. The milk was not very nutritious but she had produced a substance the filly did nurse frequently. Unfortunately, Maliya was able to get her nose into the creep feeder and gorge on the milk pellets and foundered severely. This was the first of her trials. But she fought and raised the filly anyway - (we could not take the filly away from her until she was well over 8 months old as per Maliya's instructions) and she recovered. Maliya produced many foals for us including our treasured KA Namirah who eventually produced both Sundance KA (our junior sire) and Prima Bella KA (one of the winninest straight mares) and also the ethereal and international winner Remarqable KA. She has foals in Great Britain, Germany, Venezuela as well as the United States. Maliya suffered a serious colic while we were at the Event and the surgeon told us he did not think she would make it. She was in foal at the time only 20 days gestation. But she pulled through and miraculously kept the foal - and Marqo Polo KA was born. But the surgery had left her with severe scar tissue in her abdomen and she suffered repeated bouts of colic for the next two years. Most were mild. But one was very serious and we did a second surgery. She recovered from that one as well and also kept her foal and delivered Legacy KA (herd sire for Haras Al Rod in Venezuela). When Legacy was one month old Maliya colicked again and this time it was not to be...... facing a third surgery - we could not bring ourselves to ask her to fight again. Though she would have - and still was - amazingly still standing and fighting despite a dead intestine. Sadly and with much heartache we let her go to a better place...... but Maliya - you taught us the true meaning of friend, warrior and spirit. And we still miss you each day!

KA Naadya
1992 Bay Straight Egyptian Mare
Saklawi Jedran Strain

The daughter Kehilan chose to keep from AK Bint Sittana turned out to be a very good choice! A bay look alike of her very exotic sire - Nasuli. Nasuli was born and raised at Kehilan, and purchased by us as a two year old. With only two small foal crops on the ground - Nasuli was exported to Italy where many of his get have won in International competition. He died shortly after export and only sired a very few offspring in his entire lifetime. Fortunately one of them was our beloved "Nadi". Nadi was a favorite mare at the farm for not only her exotic beauty but her soulfully sweet disposition. She loved all people and animals! A kind expression would mislead the admirer into thinking she was completely serene - until turned loose! Then she took your breath away with her gorgeous trot and tail carriage. The eptiome of an Arabian in motion - flagged tail, driving hocks, animated action with a suspended pause - nose tipped to the air and one eye on her admirer to know just when to stop and snort! Nadi was a unique blending of some of the foundation breeding of the Egyptian royalty. With triple *Ibn Moniet El Nefous, four lines to *Morafic, one to the illustrious *Ansata Ibn Halima and Ramses Fayek. A sprinkling of Babson blood thrown in and tail female to Bint El Bataa. But what Nadi possessed in abundance - she produced in abundance - TYPE and PRESENCE. Her first foal by Makhsous was a stunning bay stallion sold to be a herd sire. A premature death brought him back to Kehilan where he now stands as a male replica of his dam! Her second son stands at Rachel Peters - Song of Egypt Arabians. One Marquis daughter was purchased by Mary Ellen Chavez of Los Lunas, NM to anchor her straight breeding program and as a compliment to her Makhnificent son - Donatello KA. With two gorgeous daughters entering our broodmare herd - Mary Ellen eventually persuaded us to sell her Nadi - knowing that a perfect and loving home was to be hers forever. For whoever had the privilege of caring for Nadi became her soulmate. No future sales for Nadi. Heartbreakingly, Nadi contracted cancer and bravely fought for her life - heavy in foal to Imperial Baarez. But she succumbed shortly before the foal would be viable and tragically Mary Ellen lost her newest soulmate. Her daughter Conntessa KA foaled the Imperial Baarez colt her dam was to have carried - and he is a dandy! And now she is in foal to Donatello KA for an eagerly awaited foal. Here at Kehilan - Nadi's two daughters - Isabella and Arabella are both Egyptian Event winners with Arabella a Futurity Champion. They are the young royalty now - and have a place of honor in our barn. Come visit them and see their dam's big, huge soft eyes and watch them prance and parade - just as she always did.
